With today's homes nearly hermetically sealed inside-out, it becomes more important not to have anything lying around giving off toxic gases like formaldehyde. For some home owners, this can be a mystery cause of some potential serious conditions:

"Formaldehyde, a colorless, pungent-smelling gas, can cause watery eyes, burning sensations in the eyes and throat, nausea, and difficulty in breathing in some humans exposed at elevated levels (above 0.1 parts per million). High concentrations may trigger attacks in people with asthma. There is evidence that some people can develop a sensitivity to formaldehyde. It has also been shown to cause cancer in animals and may cause cancer in humans."

Formaldehyde is the most common of the "Volatile Organic Compounds" [VOC] as they are called. At Alden Design Studios, we only use Formaldehyde-free materials, insuring that this is never a source of illness for our clients, living in today's nearly air-tight homes. We take this a step further and use low-VOC paints, varnishes and wood finishes. This costs a bit more, but our customers can't smell the finished results, which is the whole idea.

FOR THE REST OF US:
We use only Forest Stewardship Council [FSC] certified woods in our cabinetry. This means all of our wood comes from forests that are managed to reduce negative impacts on the environment, including water tables, indigenous peoples, wildlife and their habitats - worldwide. This also means the woods are sourced from sustainable species and absolutely NO wood is sourced from endangered rain forest species.
